Dr. Jo Mynard is a Professor in the Faculty of Global Liberal Arts and the Director of the Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) at Kanda University of International Studies in Japan. She has also been the Director of the Research Institute for Learner Autonomy Education (RILAE) since 2017.

In her role as the Director of RILAE, she coordinates multiple small and large-scale research projects related to language learner autonomy, and teaches and mentors learning advisors as part of the Learning Advisor Education programme.

She completed her Doctorate in Education (TEFL) at the University of Exeter, UK in 2003 and her M.Phil, in Applied Linguistics at Trinity College, Dublin in 1997.

Before joining KUIS, she worked as an Associate Professor of English language at NUCB/Koryo College in Nagoya. Prior to moving to Japan, she worked in the United Arab Emirates and was a faculty member and Founder / Coordinator of the Learning Enhancement Centre (LEC) at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi.

She has worked as an educator in Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Spain and the UK. She has also lived and worked briefly in France, Germany, the USA, and Australia. She has been a visiting scholar at universities in Mexico and Thailand.

She is the co-founder of three open-access, peer review journals:
SiSAL Journal (Studies in Self-Access Learning) (founded in 2010),
Relay Journal (founded in 2017),
Journal for the Psychology of Language Learning (founded in 2018).

She was a committee member of the IATEFL Learner Autonomy Special Interest Group from 2001 to 2020. She was the Publications Officer for many of those years. She is now a member of its international advisory board. http://lasig.iatefl.org

She has been a member of the Scientific Committee for the International Association for the Psychology of Language Learning (http://www.iapll.com) since 2016 and was elected to the executive board (Publications Officer) in June 2018.

She is a member of the international advisory board for IAFOR - the International Academic Forum. https://iafor.org/

Her professional interests are learner autonomy, advising in language learning, self-access learning, affect, the psychology of learning, and CALL. She has co-edited and co-authored several books on learner autonomy, advising in language learnin, language learner psychology, and social language learning spaces.

She was one of the conveners of a symposium on "Navigating Learner Autonomy in a Multicultural and Multilingual World — A Reflective Dialogical Approach" at the World Congress of Applied Linguistics in Groningen, the Netherlands in 2021.
