Hidefumi Hiura received his doctoral degree in structural chemistry from Waseda University and joined NEC Corporation in 1992. Therein he enjoyed producing and characterizing carbon nanotubes and graphene until 1997. He later switched his research to cluster science and devoted himself to synthesize a series of metal-encapsulated silicon clusters using an ion trap. For the first decade of this millennium, he had engaged in the R&D of next-generation semiconductors using metal-encapsulated silicon clusters, carbon nanotubes, and graphene as a novel constituent of transistors. His current field of research is chemistry and physics of vibrational light-matter interaction.
