 微生物、その中でも細菌は、南極から温泉、深海底など地球上のあらゆる場所に生息しています。地球の恒常性を維持には、この微生物群集の働きはなくてはならないものです。例えば、地球規模の物質循環から浄化槽内にいたるまで分解者としての役割や、有害物質のバイオレメディエーションなど、微生物群集が重要な役割を担っていることは明らかです。ところが、地球上の細菌種の中で人間によって単離されている総数は全体の1%にも満たず、様々な働きの中身はブラックボックスとして扱われがちでした。近年、放射性や安定同位体を利用する方法や分子生物学的手法の目覚ましい進歩で、こうした物質循環に関与する細菌群集の構造と機能に関する研究が急速に進むようになりました。

 21世紀の循環型社会の構築や、温暖化現象の機構解明や制御技術開発にとって微生物群集の働きに関する研究は重要な研究課題です。そこで,我々の研究室では様々な水環境(海洋,河川・湖沼,生物処理施設)を対象に,微生物の群集構造と機能に関する研究を行っています。
