Our activity is concentrated on basic research on utilizing by-products produced during processing steps of biomass reduction as industrial materials. For example, edible canna (Canna edulis) and nepier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) are tropical crops, but they perform well high productivity in temperate zones. Using their biomass, we can use Aspergillus species to converse to sugars, and sugars to ethanol by yeasts. By-product from these processes is used as substrate for lactic fermentation. Nutrients for the fermentation can be obtained from fresh biomass of the same crops or wasted vegetables. Lactic fermentation means treating the substrate with low pH to create a favorable condition for Trichoderma reesei to attack on lingo-cellulose to converse to sugars. By economic exploitation of such by-products, we may reduce producing price and assure a stable supply of raw materials for industry.
