Toru Yoshikawa graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan (UOEH) in 1996, and became Board Certified Member of the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine in 2000 and Senior Occupational Health Physician certified by the the Japan Society for Occupational Health (JOHS) in 2005. He joined an international collaborative research project at the International Health Care Workers Safety Center, University of Virginia in 2002 after studying at the Center in 2004 under Prof. Janine Jagger.
He is the Acting Director of the Research Center of Overwork-Related Disorders (RECORDs), National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (JNIOSH). He is also a member of the Research Group of Occupational Health for Health Care Workers of JOHS and a chief of EPINet - surveillance team of the Japanese Research Group for Infection Controls and Practices (JRGOICP).
His major areas of interests are the research and practices for practical improvements of workplace environment and working conditions in terms of occupational safety and health. Working in technical cooperation projects for developing countries, he contributes to develop training packages for work improvements in small enterprises and in health care settings in Asia and Africa. He is particularly interested in occupational infection control such as preventing needlestick injuries through a nation-wide surveillance network and promoting the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in health care settings. He contributed to develop the guidelines for managing viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) including Ebola hemorrhagic fever in clinical settings and public health in Japan in 2014, dealing with occupational safety and health issues including the proper use of PPE and controlling working conditions for health care workers. He also contributed to developing the guide for business continuity plans (BCP) for pandemic flu for health care sectors in 2013.
He have launched his new academic carrier at National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Japan since April 2015 after contributing to Ebola response team as the WHO national occupational safety and health coordinator for Liberia, November 2014 to March 2015.
