Takuto Sakamoto

As a faculty member of the Graduate Program on Human Security (HSP) at the University of Tokyo, I conduct research on pressing issues related with "human security" primarily from the perspective of international relations. Specifically, my research themes cover a broad range of topics such as policy deliberations on peace and security at the United Nations Security Council, armed conflicts and political order in Africa, and livelihoods and conflicts of dryland pastoralists in the Sahel. Methodologically, I combine various approaches such as fieldwork, large-scale text analysis, satellite image analysis, and simulations.

Through these diverse efforts, I aim to contribute to the promotion of human security in the global society from an academic standpoint. Here are some of the research topics I am currently working on or plan to start in the future:

1. Systematic investigation of conceptual and normative dynamics concerning peace and security in the international society: Using large-scale text analysis of UN documents.
2. Social and environmental changes and pastoralists in the West African Sahel: Utilizing fieldwork, satellite image analysis, and simulations.
3. Reconstruction of the theory of political order using network science: With African countries as examples.
4. Full automation of quantitative conflict research using artificial intelligence: From problem discovery to manuscript generation.
