The objective of this study was to examine whether photofunctionalization of titanium would recover the bone-titanium integration strength in aged rats to the equivalent level of younger adult rats. In vivo osseointegration was evaluated by biomechanical push-in test at day 21. The integration strength of the non-photofunctionalized implants was decreased 35% for 70-week-old rats compared to 8-week-old rats (p < 0.01). However, there was no significant difference between the photofunctionalized implants placed into 70-week-old rats and the non-photofunctionalized implants placed into 8-week-old rats. These results suggest that photofunctionalization of titanium can overcome compromised bone-titanium integration in aged rats.
