Reto Hofmann (PhD 2010, Columbia Univ) is Adjunct Researcher at the Waseda Institute for Advanced Studies and Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia. He specializes in modern Japanese and international history, and has wider research interests in twentieth-century Europe (especially Italy and Germany), fascism, imperialism, and the global Cold War.

His first monograph _The Fascist Effect: Japan and Italy, 1915-1952_ was published by Cornell University Press in 2015. His research as appeared in the Journal of Asian Studies, Japan Forum, Journal of Global History, and Journal of Contemporary History.

Hofmann has taught international and Japanese history at Columbia University, Monash University, Waseda, and the University of Western Australia.

He is working on his second book project, a transwar history of the Japanese right, tentatively entitled “Out of Empire: The Japanese Right and the Making of the Postwar Order, 1920-1980"
