Structural characterization of Ar+-irradiated SrTiO3 showing room-temperature blue luminescence

Structural distortions of Ar+-irradiated SrTiO3, which shows room-temperature blue luminescence, were studied through synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The reciprocal-lattice maps around (114)SrTiO3 reveal that the Ar+-irradiated SrTiO3 surface has expanded lattice parameters along the [001] direction due to oxygen vacancies. From an analysis of the asymmetric diffraction profile around (002)SrTiO3, the surface region modified by the Ar+-irradiation is estimated to be 21 nm in depth.
