Combining historical documents before 19th century, natural science proxies, and theoretical modeling, we have demonstrated in multiple cases that events comparable to the so-called Carrington event, which was said to be the largest in observation history, occur at a considerable frequency. In addition, we have pioneered collaborative methods that go beyond solar physics, such as collaboration with other natural science field research using historical materials, feedback on historical research, and development of open science methods.
