1988年東京大学大学院工学系研究科修士課程修了。博士（工学）。（株）リコー中央研究所、ATR人間情報通信研究所、奈良先端科学技術大学院大学を経て、2007年より京都大学大学院情報学研究科（システム科学専攻）教授。専門は論理生命学、とりわけ、統計科学、機械学習、大規模計算など情報学的手法を用いて、脳神経系の情報処理や細胞動態に対するモデリングを行っている。
