Impacts of selective logging on spatial structure of tree species composition in Bornean tropical rain forests

ボルネオ熱帯低地において、択伐施業が樹種組成の空間構造に及ぼす影響を調べた。原生林と弱度伐採林では任意の2森林間の距離が近いほど、樹種組成は互いに似ていた。しかし強度伐採林では、パイオニア優占パッチや原生林種優占パッチがランダムに分布するため、こうした空間構造は消失していた。

東南アジア熱帯雨林では、フタバガキ科などの数百種もの樹木が数年に一度、一斉に同調して開花する。熱帯土壌は貧栄養であるが、この一斉開花・結実時に森林生態系内のどこが栄養塩のソース・シンクになっているのかを調べた。リターフォール、材、大径根を一斉開花の始まり（2010年）から終わりまで連続サンプリングし、主要元素の動態をしらべた。

熱帯土壌は、リンが欠乏する一方、窒素は比較的多い。土壌微生物は、まず窒素を効率的に獲得したうえで高窒素なリン酸分解酵素をより多く産生することで、効率的にリンを獲得しようとしていると考えられる。そこで、ボルネオの野外施肥サイトにおいて、土壌微生物の窒素獲得に関する分解酵素活性パターン（BG:NAG比およびBG:(NAG+LAP)比）を調べた。

近年、熱帯諸国では、これまでの無秩序な森林伐採に対する反省から持続的森林管理が導入され始めている。この主目的は木材の持続的利用であるが、炭素貯留に対するプラス効果も持つ可能性がある。無秩序伐採林・持続的管理林・原生林において、生態系内の炭素貯留量を定量した。生態系モデルCENTURYを用いて様々な伐採/気候変動シナリオを組み込んだ炭素動態シミュレーションも行い、持続可能な施業方法の提案を行った。
