Utilizing user-generated digital information for research, exhibit and education at Science Museum settings

This demonstration will introduce some ongoing projects which utilize user-generated digital information for facilitating communication between science museums and users.

(1) Video Database System
Additional information about museum collection, such as research note, interview, untold fact etc., is important not only for research but also for exhibit and education at museums.
This system can enable researchers to record such narratives of themselves and colleagues about museum collections by storing videos, audio, photos, documents in a web database. We have also developed a mobile application for both Android OS and iOS to post contents to this web database. By using this application, posted contents in the web database can be easily shared with Facebook.
By utilizing this database, researchers can exchange their knowledge about museum collections in their research field. In addition, visitors will get interested in museum collections by browsing narratives in the galleries.

(2) 3D Coloring of Dinosaurs
Little is known about dinosaur skin color. Coloring the ancient mysterious creatures encourage people not only to get excited but also to think scientifically. It is similar for people to relive the experiences of research activity in museums.
We have developed an Adobe AIR application that enables users to restore their own 3-D dinosaurs by converting the 2-D coloring in pictures made by the users.
The 3-D computer graphics of the users' original dinosaur is displayed on the PC screen by reading into the picture of dinosaur through web camera.
In accordance with the angle of the 2-D pictures, the users can view the 3-D dinosaur from all directions.

(3) Science Literacy Passport System
A Science Literacy Passport System is proposed for identifying individual learning outcomes.
Another web database have been developed for this system to record information about on-site educational programs at 20 Japanese museums.
“Science Literacy Passport” is issued to registered users and passports allow users to experience the on-site educational programs and to store their learning record in this database.
This system is an electronic record used by both the museums and users. The users can look at their learning record and the museums can understand the users’ learning trends across multiple users. Through this system, users can recognize one’s tendencies and motivations in selecting learning resources of museums and evaluate their learning pathways. Museums can use the system as a database to analyze usage trends and extract the public’s topics of concern. They can accumulate and transmit museum utilization case examples by topics, generations and museum types.
