Firman Mangasa Simanjuntak is a scientist at World Premier International Research Centers Initiative – Advanced Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University - Japan. He earned a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from National Chiao Tung University - Taiwan in 2016. He is an expert in synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials as well as electronic device design and fabrication. He has experience in synthesizing thin film, nanorod, nanofiber, and nanowire structures employing various methods, such as; ion beam irradiation, physical vapor deposition, hydrothermal (growth and precipitation), and chemical oxidation. His characterization skills include; Transmission Electron Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, UV-visible Light Spectroscopy, Microprobe Raman Spectroscopy, Photoluminescence, Differential Thermal/Thermo-gravimetric, and Semiconductor Device Analyzer.
His research interests lie in the field of materials processing and analysis for electronic devices. Currently, his research work focuses on the investigation of neuromorphic (brain-like) behaviors in atomic and valence switch devices for artificial synapse and neural network computing applications.
His research work published in high-impact factor nanotechnology and physics peer-reviewed international journals, such as Nanotechnology (IOP), Nanoscale Research Letters (Springer), Applied Physics Letters (AIP), Journal of Material Science (Springer) and various other high-impact journals. He published 30 (thirty) journal and conference papers within the last 4 (four) years.
He serves as an editor for Advances in Nanomaterials, Sustinere: Journal of Environment & Sustainability, and Journal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering as well as a journal reviewer for Nanoscale Research Letters, Sensor, Coatings, and Applied Sciences. In addition, he also served as an invited technical and reviewer committee member for SCOPUS Indexed conference proceedings of The 6th ICNMS (Florida, USA), The 5th ICMSE (Xiamen, China), The 4th ICMEA (Wuhan, China) and several other international conferences. Dr. Firman is a member of several international scientific societies and also takes part as a research collaborator for many international research institutions in Taiwan, India, and Indonesia.
