Jennifer completed her doctorate in Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford in 2018 funded by a Wellcome Trust PhD Studentship. Her thesis, entitled "Inte" at Intersections: Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Mainstreamed Japanese Youth and the Search for Belonging, was based on 15 months of multi-sited fieldwork in Japan. It explores how young deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) Japanese who were educated in mainstream schools, colloquially known as ‘inte’ (a shortened form of the loanword ‘integration’), negotiate ‘hearing’ and ‘deaf’ spaces. Poised at intersections between special education and academic integration, deaf and hearing, and signed and spoken languages, these DHH youth are engaged in a continuous and reflexive process of co-constructing ‘spaces of belonging’. Building upon her doctoral work, Jennifer’s ongoing research investigates the relationship between educational practices and the social integration of DHH students in Japan.
