In order to gain an understanding of the entire system of Japanese high school track and field, in 2011 I attended and observed meets at several locations throughout the greater Kanto area, including Tokyo, Saitama, Gunma, Ibaraki, Chiba and Kanagawa. There has been very little published in English about this field, and very few non-Japanese have had any involvement in it. As part of the project, I maintain a database, profiling over 150 Japanese high schools, with at least 3 schools from every prefecture, (with a couple exceptions, such as Okinawa).
