Riku Yokoyama is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Policy and Culture Studies of Chuo University in Tokyo, Japan. He also serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Philosophical Association of Japan. He studied philosophy, ethics, and social studies and obtained his PhD with a thesis entitled ”The Actuality of Max Scheler’s Philosophy of Emotions” in 2018, supervised by Prof. Dr. Taiju Okochi at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo. He has taught philosophy at multiple universities in Japan including Shizuoka University, Tokai University, The Open University of Japan, Sophia University, and Okayama Prefectural University. From 2012 to 2015, he had studied at Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg in Germany advised by Prof. Dr. Regine Kather, supported by a grant by JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization). In 2015 he worked as a Research Associate at the Department of Christian Philosophy, directed by Prof. Dr. Markus Enders, also in Freiburg. After suspending his studies due to the death of his spouse, he returned to Japan and was appointed to a Research Fellow of JSPS (the Japan Society of the Promotion of Science) (2016-2019). He had also been a visiting researcher at University of Basel, advised by Prof. Dr. Angelika
Krebs, supported by the Young Researchers’ Exchange Program Between Japan and Switzerland of ETH Zurich (2016-2017). In 2017 he won The Japanese Phenomenological Association’s Young Scholar Award.
His main research areas are phenomenology and philosophical anthropology, with a focus on the phenomenological analysis of emotions and values. Currently, he is investigating a phenomenological approach to social normativity, focusing on its emotional and motivational aspect, inspired by classical phenomenological authors such as Max Scheler, Martin Heidegger, Edith Stein,
and Dietrich von Hildebrand as well as a neo-phenomenologist Hermann Schmitz. He is also interested in bioethics and environmental ethics within the phenomenological and philosophically anthropological framework.
