The Sagami Sea is the one of the most informative area on octocoral research in Japan including the data from 19th Century expedition such as Challenger, Siboga, Tiefsee, Albatross and Sixten Bock's and the research by Doflein, Kumakichi Aoki, and Kumao Kinoshita etc. These results show that the Sagami Sea has high biodiversity on octocorals. In this preliminary report, we compile the literature data of gorgonian coral species collected from Sagami-Bay and adjacent waters during 100 years, and show the species list from the project "Study on Environmental Changes in the Sagami Sea and Adjacent Coastal Area with Time Serial Comparison of Fauna and Flora" by National Science Museum, Tokyo during 2001-2005. Data Series include 397 specimens during this project. It has been recorded total 13 families and 115 species of gorgonian corals only in Sagami Bay and total 143 species in Sagami Bay and adjacent waters. All gorgonian species collected in Japan and adjacent waters composed with 223 species. By our compiled data, it was shown that more than half of whole Japanese recorded species were collected from Sagami Bay. In the literature, 25 species were only recorded from littoral (<200m) and 61 species were recorded from bathyal-abyssal (>200m). In our project, 294 specimens were collected from littoral (<200m) and 86 specimens were collected from bathyal-abyssal (>200m). It should be note that our project found that 12 first recorded species from the Sagami Sea and 5 first recorded species from Japanese waters. There is possibility to find more species and first recorded species from this area. Further research to re-check and revise Sagami Sea octocoral species is needed.
