This paper organizes prior research on job-hunting processes between university graduates and employers in Japan. Prior research about this topic can be divided into two issues: the first is based on the theory of social mobility; the second is about how job-matching processes sort strong candidates from weak ones. Because prior research assumes the signaling theory and the "social birth" theory, that is, the student's background is not related to the first occupational status after taking a degree of the (prestigious) university, are conformable for Japanese employment practices, most of prior research emphasized the correspondence between the first occupational status and the academic background. However, these prior research have failed to focus on the theory of social stratification. This paper argues that further research can contribute to new findings related to; (1) observation of direct effect from family's socioeconomic status to first occupational status (2) practical criteria for hiring new graduates and job-matching processes between graduates and employers may be affected by the biases related to social stratification.
