CHEY Hyoung-kyu is Professor of International Political Economy at National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS). He received his B.A. in Political Science (minor in Economics) from Sogang University, Seoul, South Korea, and his M.Sc. in Politics of the World Economy and his Ph.D. in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He worked as an Economist in the Economic Research Institute at the Bank of Korea (South Korea’s central bank) prior to joining GRIPS in 2011. He was a Japan Foundation Fellow, and has held visiting positions at various institutes including the University of Southern California, the University of Tokyo, National Chengchi University (Taiwan), the Institute for Far Eastern Studies (South Korea), Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (South Korea), Sogang University and the Bank of Korea. His main research area is the international political economy of money and finance, with a regional specialty in East Asia. He is the author of The International Political Economy of the Renminbi: Currency Internationalization and Reactive Currency Statecraft (Routledge, 2022) and International Harmonization of Financial Regulation? The Politics of Global Diffusion of the Basel Capital Accord (Routledge, 2014), and his papers have been published in major journals in the fields of international political economy and international economics, including Review of International Political Economy, New Political Economy, International Studies ReviewRegulation & Governance, Asian Survey and The World Economy.
