The goal of my research is to develop hydrogel composite materials which look and feel like traditional gels, but exhibit an enhanced range of functions. We also are interested in the inverse problem: can we give materials which are vastly different from hydrogels (stiff, dry, metallic, or ceramic) gel-like properties? By creating hydrogel composites, we have a platform for solving both of these problems. Our laboratory works on pioneering research across the entire spectrum of science, from chemical synthesis and fabrication, to mechanical and physical characterization, to practical application. Our ultimate goal of developing these materials is for real-life applications, ranging from synthetic biomaterials such as ligaments or cartilage, to materials for bulletproof, puncture-resistant, and fire-proof clothing.
