M.A. in English Language and Linguistics(University of Essex), B.A. in Economics(Keio University)
Profile
Eiichi Iwasaki is currently affiliated with Waseda University as an adjunct researcher while teaching part-time (with non-expiring contracts) there and at three other universities in and round Tokyo, Japan. He has published three sole-authored research books on linguistic theory, in particular, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, utilising a number of distinct frameworks including generative grammar (cartographic approach) and cognitive linguistics. His main research centres round these fields, as well as the philosophy of language and of linguistics. In the past, he collaborated with some distinguished linguists such as Prof. Andrew Radford, Prof. Lorie Heggie, and Prof. Yoshio Endo. His past papers (including unpublished manuscripts) have been cited in world-leading journals such as Language, Linguistic Inquiry, and Cognitive Linguistics, as well as The Oxford Handbook of Ellipsis, in addition to doctoral dissertations at prestigious American universities. Once an expert syntactician, he moved to semantics and has been pioneering a program of original and innovative research on non-referential semantics with a focus on variables, inspired by Nishiyama’s Semantic Theory. A graduate of Keio University’s Economics Department and the University of Essex’s Department of Language and Linguistics (graduate programme), where he established acquaintance with some of the finest linguists in the world, he further briefly enjoyed a privileged period as a Visiting Scholar of St. Edmund’s College, Cambridge. He also held the official title of Research Affiliate at Keio University’s Research Centre for Foreign Language Education (until 2011). As an experienced teacher of EFL and a humanistic educator, he has taught a wide range of courses in ten reputable schools in both secondary and higher education, constituting a total teaching career of more than 15 years. He has also a keen interest in business, economy, and politics. He is an occasional visitor to fine art museums, and to a shrine in Kyoto.
