Jeffrey Trambley is a professor at the Faculty of International Communication of Musashino Gakuin University in Japan and at the institution’s graduate school program. Originally from Minnesota in the USA, he began his EFL career teaching in the Czech Republic at the secondary school level. In Japan since 1997, he first spent 2 years as an Assistant English Teacher (AET) for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan on the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Programme in Fukushima Prefecture before moving to Tokyo to complete his Master’s degree in Vocal Music at the Tokyo College of Music.

He has taught at universities in the Tokyo area since 2002. His research interests span a variety of disciplines including EFL reading assessment methods, student motivation, gender bias in testing, ICT in education, and issues of diversity and inclusion in higher education. 


He has presented at academic conferences in the USA, Europe, the Middle East and throughout Asia and has given keynote addresses and presentations at an array of conferences.

Additionally, he writes and edits for official Japanese Ministry of Education approved English language textbooks with Kyoiku Shuppan and Kairyudo two of Japan’s major publishers for secondary level English textbooks, and his English phrasebook for Japanese learners was published a fourth time in September of 2018 under the title 「ネイティブ日常英会話 リアルフレーズ3100」with Shinsei Publishing. In October 2021, he co-authored a vocabulary and phrasebook「日本人の9割が知らない英単語100」with Chikumashobo Publishing. In October 2022, his second publication with the same publisher was released under the title「シンプルで伝わる英語表現――日本語との発想の違いから学ぶ」. 

In addition to university teaching, research and writing, he remains active as a professional musician lending his musical skills to concert performances both as a baritone soloist and conductor with community choruses. From April 2022, he is a part-time adjunct lecturer at the Foreign Service Training Institute (FSTI) at the Foreign  Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) coaching presentation, public speaking and pronunciation for high level ministers and diplomats.
