可換環論の研究をして来ました．特に，代数多様体に現れる特異点の性質を代数的，環論的方法で解析すること，今まで知られていなかった性質をもつ可換環の例の発見がライフワークでした．正標数の手法を用いて，代数幾何の特に極小モデル理論に現れる，有理特異点，(対数的)端末特異点などを正標数の Frobenius 写像を用いた代数的手法で特徴付けできるという結果をいくつか得ました．
最近のテーマとしては，2次元正規特異点で，特異点解消の幾何的方法での整閉イデアルの解析及び新しい理論の発見，正標数の手法を用いた Hilbert-Kunz 重複度，F-signature の研究，特異点の種々の不変量と重複度との関係などの研究を行なっています．
