Pneumatic actuators have been widely utilized in various fields because of their advantages of low cost, safety, and high compliance. However, pneumatic systems need many air supply lines from a compressor, control lines from a controller, and power supply lines, making them complicated and large. This paper proposes a new operational method reducing the number of control lines and power supply lines in pneumatic systems. It needs two key components; Multiplex Pneumatic Actuator Drive (MPAD) and Local Power Supply (LPS) for each local module. MPAD utilizes acoustic communication between the oscillator nearby the compressor and receivers nearby each pneumatic actuators in air supply. LPS generates electric power utilizing compressed air from the compressor and supplies generated power for each local module including the pneumatic actuator. The prototype module is operated by generated power from LPS, and the pneumatic actuator 10 meters away from the oscillator is controlled by acoustic communication. Experimental results shows practicability saving control lines and power supply lines for pneumatic systems.
