Social cognition is defined as the mental operations underlying social behavior. Impairments of social cognition are linked to poor real-world functional outcomes in patients with schizophrenia or mood disorders. To improve social cognition in these psychiatric conditions, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used with limited success. For example, anodal tDCS on prefrontal cortical areas has been found to partially improve emotional recognition, a domain of social cognition, in schizophrenia. To more effectively obtain the benefit of tDCS, efforts to identify cortical sites more directly related to social cognition are needed.
In this chapter, we provide an overview on studies to treat social cognition disturbances in mental disorders with tDCS, and discuss its neurobiological mechanisms. Topics include optimal conditions for tDCS, e.g., targeted brain sites, to elicit the effect on social cognition.
