エスピリトゥ アイリーン

Aileen A. Espíritu is a Researcher at the Barents Institute at the UiT The Arctic University of Norway. She has ongoing research on sustainable development in the Arctic regions, notably its urban areas; region-building in the Arctic and the Barents Region; identity politics in indigenous and non-indigenous Northern communities; the impact of industrialization and post-industrialization on mono-industry towns in the High North and Arctic; and the politics of community sustainability in Russia in comparative perspective. Her main research projects are Arctic Urban Sustainability examining the social, economic, political, and cultural sustainability in Arctic cities and Arctic in Asia looking at comparative border studies and transnationalism in the Arctic and Asia, compared. She has also been engaged in the project Future North, focused on knowledge production on new landscape typologies, including the everyday in the category of landscape, while exploring new tools to articulate and narrate such perspectives. Currently, Aileen has been conducting interviews on strategies of urban sustainability in the Arctic, an ethnography of the Arctic refugee crossings in the Russian-Norwegian border and also looking at precarious work in the tourism industry in the Arctic. Espíritu has been an Associate Editor for Polar Geography and is a co-editor of the international refereed journal Barents Studies. Aileen, with colleagues from the Arctic Centre in Finland, will also be publishing a book for Routledge in 2019 on Everyday Life in the Arctic.

Aileen is currently a Visiting Professor at the Arctic Research Centre, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan (Until 30 Nov 2018).
