Recently, there has been considerable controversy regarding how to handle and resolve conflicts between obligations under the UN Security Council's sanction regimes, and obligations under international human rights law. This paper aims to analyze the doctrine of "equivalent protection" as a tool for dealing with such conflicts. This doctrine has been developed in the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights and was applied in relation to the UN sanction regime on Iraq by the Al-Dulimi Judgment.
