Ana Sousa graduated in biology by the University of Aveiro in 2001, and completed her PhD in Biology in September 2009 from the same institution. With her PhD work she characterized the levels and biological effects of Endocrine Disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the Portuguese coastal area with special focus on organotins (OTs) and invertebrates. During her MSc and PhD she worked at several foreign institutions including the University of Coruña, Spain; the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology (EAWAG), Switzerland; the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan and the Center for Marine Environmental Studies (CMES), Japan. Her first postdoc under the theme “Human Exposure to Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals: Levels, Pathways and Health Risk Assessment” was developed between Portugal (University of Aveiro and University of Beira Interior) and Japan (CMES, Ehime University).
Ana Sousa’s main research interests and experience include endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), particularly the assessment of the levels and effects of organotin compounds in wildlife and humans. She is also interested in the characterization of contaminants (including EDCs) in the indoor environment and in the use of household pets as sentinels. Presently she is working on the in vitro and in vivo toxicological properties of Ionic liquids.
