Atsushi Miyawaki, M.D., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Public Health, the University of Tokyo. He received his Ph.D. in Medicine from the University of Tokyo in the spring of 2019 with a concentration in health economics and statistics (mentored by Prof. Yasuki Kobayashi). His main research interests are in health policy and health services research, especially in vulnerable populations. Examples include quantifying the effects of a medical subsidy on children's health in Japan (Miyawaki et al, Soc Sci Med, 2017; Miyawaki and Kobayashi, Health Policy, 2019), evaluating the impact of school lunch program on childhood obesity in Japan (Miyawaki et al, J Pub Health, 2018), and disparities in care quality in the homeless population in US (Miyawaki et al., JGIM, 2020a; Miyawaki et al., JGIM, 2020b; Miyawaki et al., Soc Sci Med, 2020). He has also been interested in health services research related to aging, for example, the effect of caregiving and LTCI policy on family caregivers (Miyawaki et al, Geriatrics Gerontol Int, 2017; Miyawaki et al, Soc Sci Med, 2019; Miyawaki et al.; BMC Geriatrics; 2020). As for the COVID-19 pandemic, he has led a team that analyzed large-scale data on changes in health services and epidemiology of diseases, trying to learn lessons from this pandemic (Miyawaki et al., Ann Surg, 2020; Maeda et al., ADC F&N, 2021; Abe et al., JACI: In Practice, 2021; Ikesu et al., 2021).

Alongside his academic work, he continues in clinical practice as a physician of general internal medicine and home health care.
