Caleb Carter is a scholar of Japanese religions and Buddhist studies. His current book manuscript examines the historical formation of Shugendō through a case study of Togakushi-san (Nagano). He also studies the recent trend of ‘power spots’ (pawāsupotto) at Shinto shrines, with attention to ideological and economic tensions that have arisen from the new designation among residential priests, shrine visitors, and the Association of Shinto Shrines.
