Koki Hirota received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from University of Toyama, Toyama, Japan, in 1984 and 1988, respectively. In 1990, he was awarded the Yamamura Prize from Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists. From 1992 to 1994, he was a Research Fellow at the University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada, under the direction of Professor S. H. Roth (Departments of Pharmacology and Anesthesia). Currently, he works as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and as a Clinical Professor at University Hospital, University of Toyama. He has been interested in mechanisms of anesthesia in the central nervous system, studying the actions of general anesthetics on hippocampal synaptic transmission using brain slice preparations. He participated in symposia as a Chair, as in the Mechanism of Anesthesia Conference and in the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists, and he organized the International Conference on Mechanisms of Anesthesia (MAC2010, University of Toronto, Canada) as a Scientific Adviser. He serves as Associate Editorial Board in Journal of Anesthesia. He has published books entitled "Mysteries in Anesthesia: Unlock the Magic in Operating Room" in 2012, and "Odysseys in Anesthesia Labyrinth" in 2018.
