Elisabetta Porcu is Associate Professor of Asian religions and Head of Department for the Study of Religions at the University of Cape Town. Before moving to South Africa, she worked at universities in Kyoto (2004-2010) and taught Japanese religions at the University of Leipzig (2010-2014). She has been Visiting Research Scholar at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken) in Kyoto (2013-2014), Numata Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Hawaii (2013), and Visiting Professor at Kyushu University, and undertook extensive fieldwork in Japan (2004-2010; 2012; 2013-2014; 2016-2017; 2018). She is currently working on a monograph on the Gion Festival in Kyoto.
Elisabetta is an NRF (South Africa's National Research Foundation) B-rated researcher and the current President of the Association for the Study of Religion in Southern Africa (ASRSA).
She is the founding editor of the Journal of Religion in Japan (Brill) http://www.brill.com/jrj.
