I am an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya, Japan, the country's only 4-year national university specializing in sport.
My research focuses on (1) methodologies for instructing English as a foreign language, and (2) the real-time instructional language of coaches in top-level short-term sports camps.  For foreign athletes, although expectations and demands to perform remain consistent with their local counterparts, there is also valid concern that limitations in communicative competence may serve to inhibit communication (coach-player; player-player) and ensuing opportunities for success. Research into the instructional language in use in these specifialized environments can deliver athletes accessibility through awareness, a factor clearly relevant of attention across the full gamut of sport. Understanding that one possesses vocabulary fundamental to communication in a target environment would certainly make that environment appear more accessible.  The research helps to foster methodologies and reference to assist foreign athletes to participate more seemlessly internationally.
