I am studying the bases of understanding and practice of Islam by modern people.
I am particularly interested in the interpretation of the Qur‘an, which is said to be the basis of the understanding and practice of Islam. For Muslims, the Qur’an is the word of God, and I have examined who interpreted it, how it is interpreted, and how Muslims practice as a result, based on cases of how they dress (e.g., veils), consider gender (how males and females should act and their roles), and food culture (i.e., Halal food). Recently, I have been further expanding my interest in Hadith, and the understanding and practice of Islamic Law by modern people.
As religious literacy improves and more media information is available, an increasing number of people are reading the scripture, reading religious literatures, and disseminating their own interpretations. In such a relatively new situation, I am always interested in what kind of changes will be seen in the understanding and practice of Islam, including future movements.
