Setsuya Fukuda is a Senior Researcher at National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, where he conducts demographic research on the inter-relationships between gender, family formation and family policy. He received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Meiji University. After his graduate study, he worked as a researcher at Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany in 2008-2011. His current research focuses on gender role division, educational assortative mating, fertility and intergenerational transfers in international comparative settings, looking, in particular, at how Japan’s gender structure and intergenerational relations are going to change in relation to population decline, new family policies and technological development.

    New Voices from Japan provides capacity strengthening and speaking opportunities in the United States for promising young Japanese policy experts working on topics of importance to both the US and Japanese academic and policy communities. Their topics include national security; foreign policy; Japanese politics and diplomacy; Japanese business and economy; energy and environment; development, gender, and human rights; immigration; and the challenges of aging societies. The dialogue tour in the US includes meetings for participants to speak at public lectures, brown bag seminars and small group discussions with policy professionals. We welcome expressions of interest in hosting NVJ speakers from academic and policy institutions in the US.
