In this paper, I distinguish three conflicts between our commonsensical understandings of the dead: (1) a conflict about the harm of death that the dead suffers, (2) a conflict about the relations that the living person bears to the dead, and (3) a conflict about the reference of the name of the dead. Then, I argue that we need a metaphysical framework to solve the "Problems of the Dead" which result from these conflicts. After evaluating the consequences of some frameworks, I suggest that Meinongianism not only solves the problems but also accords more closely with our intuition of how we should talk about the dead, although the Meinongian framework is often considered "queer."
