High-temperature properties of thorium dioxide: A first-principles molecular dynamics study

Thorium has been considered a potential nuclear fuel for decades. To develop evaluation method for high-temperature properties of thorium dioxide as a candidate nuclear fuel, we perform first-principles molecular dynamics. The calculated enthalpy and thermal expansion agree well with the observed data. The Bredig transition temperature also coincides with experiments. Our results indicate that this method can provide reliable data of thermal properties of nuclear fuels. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
