Performance and Throughput Evaluation of a Multi-Gbps Millimeter-wave WPAN System in the Presence of Adjacent and Co-Channel Interference

This paper presents the performance evaluation of a multi-Gbps millimeter-wave wireless personal area network (WPAN) system in the presence of adjacent channel interference (ACI) and co-channel interference (CCI). The resistance of the system against ACI and CCI is investigated corresponding to different modulation schemes. In the presence of ACI, the amount of ACI that causes 0.5dB degradation in the required signal to noise ratio to achieve bit error rate of 10^<-6> for π/2-binary phase shift keying (π/2-BPSK), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 8-phase shift keying (8-PSK) and 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) are 18, 12, 5.5 and 1.5dB respectively. As ACI increases, the system performance will saturate to BER of higher than 0.01. The ACI that saturates the BER to 0.01 for π/2-BPSK, QPSK, 8-PSK and 16-QAM are 27, 22, 17 and 12.5dB. On the other hand, CCI displays a more significant impact on the system performance. In the presence of CCI, the amount of CCI that causes 0.5dB degradation in the required signal to noise ratio to achieve bit error rate of 10-6 for π/2-BPSK, QPSK, 8-phase shift keying 8-PSK and 16-QAM are -17, -18, -24 and -26dB respectively. The CCI that saturates the BER to 0.01 are found to be -7, -10, -14 and -17dB. Besides performance evaluation, this paper also investigates the impact of ACI and CCI on system throughput. System throughput generally decreases as ACI and CCI increases. However, systems with higher modulation level display a more rapidly decreasing throughput compared to that with lower modulation level. In the presence of ACI, the throughput of 16-QAM decreases to that similar with 8-PSK at ACI=3dB, the throughput of 8-PSK to that similar with QPSK at ACI=7dB, and the throughput of QPSK to that similar with π/2-BPSK at ACI=13dB. Similarly, in the presence of CCI, the throughput of 16-QAM decreases to that similar with 8-PSK at CCI=-27dB, the throughput of 8-PSK to that similar with QPSK at CCI=-23dB, and the throughput of QPSK to that similar with π/2-BPSK at CCI=-17dB.
