Hiroshi Yabu received his Ph.D. from Hokkaido University in 2004 under supervision of Prof. Masatsugu Shimomura. He started to work as an assistant professor at Research Institute for Electronic Science (RIES), Hokkaido University soon after his graduation. From 2007, he started to work as an assistant professor at Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials (IMRAM), Tohoku University. He promoted to an associate professor in 2010, and then moved to WPI-Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR), Tohoku University as a Junior Principal Investigator and started his own laboratory in 2016. He was back to IMRAM in 2021 and concurrently surves to WPI-AIMR. From Oct. 2021, he has been back to WPI-AIMR as a main affiliation and concurrently serves to IMRAM. He serves as a deputy director of Open Innovation Center of Hydrogen Science for GX, WPI-AIMR, Tohoku University, established in Oct. 2022. He promoted to a full professor and a principal investigator of WPI-AIMR on April, 2023. He also concurrently served as a visiting researcher of RIKEN Institute from 2004 to 2009 and from 2022 to 2023. He concurrently surved as a  PRESTO Researcher at Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) from 2008 to 2012 (Nanosystem & Function Emergence) and from 2012 to 2016 (Molecular Technology & Creation of New Functions). He has established AZUL Energy, Inc. on 2019 as a co-founder and serves concurrently as a board member and CSO. His current scientific interests are self-organization, biomimetics, nano-structuring of functional materials and bio-inspired materials for energy and low envrionmental impacts. He received several awards including Ichimura Prize in Science (2016), CSJ Award for Young Chemists (2011) and Young Scientists’ Prize, MEXT, Japan (2014).
