Neurologist and Neuroscientist. 1984: MD, graduated from The University of Tokyo, School of Medicine. After becoming the staff member of Department of Neurology, The University of Tokyo, got PhD degree in 1991 by discovery of Oct-3/4:Oct-4:Oct-3 (Okazawa et al., Cell1990; EMBO J 1991), which is now well known as a key regulator of ES cell and the most important factor for generating iPS cell. After working at Max-Planck Institute for Psychiatry as a staff scientist, assigned to assistant professor (Department of Neurology, The University of Tokyo) and started the research of neurodegenerative diseases, and discovered polyglutamine binding protein-1 in polyglutamine disease pathology (PQBP1) (Hum Mol Genet 1999; Neuron 2002), and intracellular accumulation of amyloid beta and JNK activation in Alzheimer's disease pathology (Mol Brain Res 2000). In addition to focusing on ultra-eraly stage of neurodegenerative diseases, he expanded the research also to mental retardation and microcephaly after discovery of PQBP1(Nat Cell Biol 2007; Nat Commun 2013; 2014; 2017; 2018; 2020, Mol Psy 2015;2018; EMBOJ 2010; EMBO Mol Med 2015, JCB 2006; 2010 etc). 2001: Head, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Neuroscience, 2003~: Professor and Chairman, Neuropathology, Tokyo Medical and Dental University. 2014~: Director, Center for Brain Integration Research, Tokyo Medical and Dental University.
