Learning in Fundermental Nursing Practice: Interaction with Patients

Purpose: The nursing students have the first experience to face the patients in fundamental clinical practice. This study aims to clarify the learning how interactions with patients were formed in fundamental nursing practice. <br />
Method: The subjects were 86 nursing students at sophomore who took clinical practice of fundamental nursing in our university. We used the data collected from clinical reports about the interaction with patients which students agreed voluntary to use. We analyzed the item of the interaction between students and patients. This study was approved by the institutional review board of ethics.<br />
Results: We analyzed 85 data of 86 subjects (98.8%). Students who had the awareness of interactions with patients were 62 subjects (72.9%). The contents to vary interactions with patients were as follows. Students had concern about the patient, consequently the patient also changed, 18 subjects (29.9%). The talk and behavior of students affected on patients, 16 subjects (25.8%). To speak with open mind changed patient’s behavior in care, 15 subjects (24.2%). Not only taking care of patients but also being given effects from patients raised interactions, 13 subjects (21.0%). Moreover, understanding about the emotion and character of patients, and patients also understanding about the nurses constructed better relationship, 9 subjects each (14.5%).<br />
Discussion: In the first clinical practice, the students learned importance of interaction between nurses and patients to improve the care. To construct good interactions, nurses have concern about the patient’s character and emotion well, and also study technics of speaking manner and adequate behavior. The role of teacher was suggested to support students to make proper interactions with patients on human caring.
