中西 郁夫

Dr. Ikuo Nakanishi received his Ph.D. from the University of Osaka under the supervision of Professor Shunichi Fukuzumi in 1999. After working as a posdoctoral researcher at the University of Osaka and the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS), he joined the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), now part of the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology, QST), in 2002. In 2021, he was appointed as the leader of the Quantum RedOx Chemistry Team (formerly the Quantum RedOx Chemistry Group) within the Quantum Life Spin Group at the Institute for Quantum Life Science (iQLS), QST.

Dr. Nakanishi has been investigating the mechanisms of radical-scavenging reactions of antioxidants using various physicochemical techniques, including stopped-flow spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and cyclic voltammetry. Based on these mechanistic insights, he has designed novel synthetic antioxidants with significantly higher radical-scavenging activity compared to naturallly occurring compounds.
