講演タイトル:'Like the pendulum in a cycloid': Brook Taylor's argument for the isochronism of the taut string
講演概要:This paper recovers Brook Taylor's argument for the isochronism of the vibrating string. A member of the Royal Society of London and for a short while its secretary, Brook Taylor (1685-1731) is allegedly the first to mathematize the motion of the vibrating string. I argue that Taylor offers an argument for isochronism. Providing such an argument is a challenge that comes from Taylor’s close dialogue with the first edition of Newton’s Principia. The argument questions the relationship between a force that varies with distance and the property of oscillations to take an equal amount of time. This is surprising given that other contemporaneous practitioners of mechanics usually assume a conceptual overlap between this force-law and isochronism. I show that the argument is based on a mechanistic strand of thought in Taylor's text on the string. Mechanism and Taylor's proof of isochronism have remained invisible to the scholarship that so far has weighed Taylor's text against the modern theory of rational mechanics.
