Introduction

Dr. Koohsari founded and leads the Urban Design Science for Health Laboratory. He holds a faculty appointment at JAIST University in Japan. He also became an Adjunct Researcher with the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Waseda University, Japan, and an Honorary Associate Fellow with the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at Deakin University, Australia. He obtained his PhD in Urban Design from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and another PhD in Health & Sport Sciences from Waseda University, Japan. His research focuses on developing scientific methods to investigate how the spatial structure of cities influences population health. He applies spatial analysis, epidemiological modelling, and artificial intelligence (AI)–based computational techniques to generate evidence addressing current and emerging challenges in urban systems.

His ongoing work focuses on several key areas, including quantitative urban morphology, spatial parametric modelling for health-supportive urban design, and AI-assisted simulations for age-friendly cities. A particular emphasis is placed on high-density urban contexts undergoing rapid demographic and infrastructural transformation. These research themes align with emerging urban research and policy priorities across Asia, especially in countries such as Japan and China, where population ageing, health equity, and the application of AI-driven spatial approaches are increasingly recognised as strategic components of urban governance and planning.

Dr Koohsari has a publication record with over 130 refereed journal articles (such as in Nature Reviews Cardiology). In 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, he was recognised in the top 2% of most influential researchers worldwide across all scientific disciplines (Stanford University & Elsevier). He is also included in the ‘Top Scientists’ list in the field of ‘Social Science & Humanities’ for the years 2022, 2024, and 2025 (Research.com). He is an editorial board member of several international journals, such as Landscape & Urban Planning, Heart & Mind, Clinical eHealth, and Journal of Architectural & Planning Research.
