João Romão is an Associate Professor in tourism, urban studies and regional science at Yasuda Women's University (Hiroshima, Japan), with a long experience as a consultant for public and private institutions in related fields. His PHD in Tourism at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Algarve (Portugal) has been completed in 2012 and since then he has 40 publications (360 citations), in the fields of tourism, environment, urban studies and regional studies. His work also includes of a book (Springer), along with frequent editorial work and the organization of academic events. He has a strong interest in innovation dynamics, creative economies and sustainable development, often applying spatial econometric methods and integrating concepts from new tendencies in economic geography into tourism studies.

João is Associate Editor of the Asia Pacific Journal or Regional Science, founding member of the Regional Science Academy and co-chair of the cluster on Tourism, Leisure and Recreation of NECTAR (Network on European Communications and Transport Activities Research) .He has worked in different countries (Portugal, USA, Netherlands and Japan) and has been involved in different multicultural and multidisciplinary teams. His teaching experiences in Portugal and Japan are related to tourism, hispitality and economic geography.
