温度に応答して水和/脱水和変化を起こすポリ(N-イソプロピルアクリルアミド)(PIPAAm)を,ナノレベルの厚さでコントロールして表面にグラフトした温度応答性培養皿を開発した。この表面で,細胞をシート状になるまで培養・増殖させ,そのシート状の構造と機能を維持したまま回収することに成功した。この細胞シートを単層のまま利用したり,重層化させたりして3次元の組織を構築する「細胞シート工学」を創出し,革新的な再生治療をつぎつぎに可能にしている。
