Profile

My research field is molecular systematics combining morphological and molecular approaches and ecology of seaweeds. I have focused on the coralline algae (the largest group of calcifying red algae) as research materials because they are widely distributed throughout the world’s oceans. Coralline algae are important organisms in the study of ecology, physiology, geology and paleontology. However, taxonomic studies of this group are not enough to support these other scientific fields. Therefore, I have conducted the taxonomic study of this group with emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region. I have also worked on physiological analyses on growth in the study of the effects of environmental stresses such as global warming and ocean acidification. I would like to pursue this dual approach to answer questions related to algal responses to global and local environmental stresses. Moreover, my current location in a marine station by the Seto Inland Sea allows many opportunities to improve our basic knowledge of various seaweeds including coralline algae by performing periodic field surveys as well as experiments using indoor and outdoor aquaria.
