For the recovery of uranium from spent nuclear fuel, selective sulfurization of uranium (UO2) and rare-earth oxides R 2O3 (R=Nd, Eu) using sulfurizing reagents, such as H 2S and CS2 was examines followed by the magnetic separation of sulfurized compounds of rare-earths. The R2O 3 for Nd and Eu were selectively sulfurized by CS2 at 500°C forming Nd2S3 and EuS, respectively, while uranium remains as UO2. Effects of sulfurizing temperature, time and agents were also investigated. After dispersing the mixture of UO2, EuS and Nd2S3 powders into deionized water, uranium was separated from the rare-earths by passing this solvent through magnetic filter with the application of 0.5T magnetic field. Effect of the number of filtration was also discussed.
