Profile

Our aims are to reveal the molecular mechanisms underlying anhydrobiosis in the Sleeping Chironomid, Polypedilum vanderplanki, which can revive even if they are completely dehydrated. In the process of this study, we identified several key genes involved in anhydrobiosis, such as LEA proteins and trehalose transporters. Recently, the draft genome of the sleeping chironomid has been deciphered and gene manipulation tools, including RNAi, CRISPR and over-expression vector systems, for the insect also has been developed. Now we have started integrative omics projects of the midge to understand comprehensively the mechanisms.
